ORLAND PARK, IL — Some Orland Park residents are frustrated with conflicting mask requirements at places like the Orland Park Public Library. Residents have begun to contact the village hall regarding mask wearing, but Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau said it isn't in the hands of the village board. Although masks are no longer mandatory in most places, some facilities and school districts are asking those who enter their facilities to wear one. In Orland Park, wearing a mask is a personal choice, according to a news release from the village. The village has received a number of inquires regarding the masks. "I want to thank the local residents who have reached out in regards to the requirements in place by local school districts and the library," Pekau said. "While I would be happy to help, there is little I can do, as school districts and the Orland Park Public Library are separate taxing bodies and governed by their own elected boards." According to the release, parents and community members have expressed their frustrations with the mask requirements. New guidance released recently by health officials allow school districts more local control in implementing pandemic rules and procedures, including the option to make mask-wearing a choice rather than a requirement for students and families. For example, Orland School District 135 will follow CDC/IDPH guidance on masks, implementing the rule that masks should be worn by students who are not vaccinated at all times. The district will also follow physical distancing of at least three feet with masks when possible, a continuation of symptom monitoring and contact tracing. As for sports, anything indoors will require a mask, while outdoor sports will not. Fully vaccinated students will not have to wear a mask, but schools may require face coverings and social distancing measures if they choose to. The school board is still awaiting final teaching plans for the upcoming school year. "I recommend that those with concerns about the mask requirements contact the members of the school and library boards for answers and more information," Pekau said.
