PITTSBURGH, PA — Veteran Steelers linebacker Vince Williams abruptly announced his retirement Wednesday as players reported to training camp before the team's first training camp workout tomorrow. Williams spent all of his eight-year NFL career with the Steelers. "Vince Williams notified us today that he will retire from the game of football," Steelers General Manager and Vice President Kevin Colbert said in a statement released Wednesday evening. "We respect his decision and want to thank him for his time with us as he consistently showed great character and leadership in addition to his contributions on the field. We wish Vince and his family all the best." Williams played and started in 14 regular-season games in 2020. He had 70 tackles (47 solo), including 14 for loss, three sacks, four quarterback hits and two fumble recoveries. His 14 tackles for loss last season ranked fifth in the NFL, according to the Steelers website. Williams was initially released by the team in March to clear space under the salary cap but was re-signed to a one-year veteran minimum contract in April. Williams was drafted in the sixth round of the 2013 draft out of Florida State.
