Libertyville Police Probe Catalytic Converter Thefts

LIBERTYVILLE, IL — The Libertyville Police Department is investigating a string of thefts of vehicle parts from parked cars that have occurred in recent weeks in town. Over the past week, a person or persons removed the catalytic converter from two different vehicles, authorities said. The first incident happened between Thursday night and early Friday at the Holiday Inn Express, 77 Buckley Road. Sign up for Libertyville Patch newsletters to get the latest updateThe converter was taken from a Toyota Prius, which was in the parking lot at the time, according to a police report. A second catalytic converter was stolen at some point Sunday night or early Monday from a Honda Odyssey while it was parked in the parking lot of a condominium complex in the 600 block of South Milwaukee Avenue. Authorities also received a report of a converter that was stolen from a Toyota Prius during daytime hours about a month ago at Red Top Plaza in the 1300 block of South Milwaukee Avenue in Libertyville. Authorities suspect the recent thefts are related but do not know if the incident last month is connected to the thefts form the past week, Libertyville Sgt. Jason Kapusinski told Patch in an email response. Authorities have no video evidence from the recent thefts to assist in their investigation and have no additional leads, he said.
