JOLIET, IL — One local minister told Joliet's City Council at Tuesday night's meeting that he counted 29 existing liquor establishments on Jefferson Street. A political science professor said there is a direct correlation between violent crimes and liquor stores. In the end, the Joliet City Council voted unanimously, 8-0, to reject a proposal from Ivan Torrijo to open a new liquor store at 1308 West Jefferson Street. He wanted to open Angie's Liquors in the same commercial plaza and shared parking lot as the David Nelson Exquisite Jewelers, 1312 West Jefferson St. Councilman Larry Hug made the motion, and he was seconded by Councilwoman Bettye Gavin. Several people in the audience clapped in agreement after the Council vote. In preparation for Tuesday's meeting, the Council received a memo and a written recommendation from Joliet Mayor Bob O'Dekirk urging the Council to approve the Angie's Liquors proposal. By the time of Tuesday's vote, the mayor reversed course. He and the entire Council ultimately agreed to reject the Angie's Liquors store idea.
