Empathy goes beyond concern or sympathy. Empathy is stepping into theshoes of someone else with the intention to better understand and feel what theyare experiencing. Empathy is expressed in the choice to be fully present withsomeone and listen beyond their words for their feelings and unmet needs.Knowing that at least one other person 'gets what I'm going through' is the gift ofempathy. The power of empathy can bridge 'us versus them' perceptions and leadto new solutions, improved relationships, better strategies for social change, areduction in loneliness, and realization of people's shared human needs and oneness. This conversation is about sharing experiences and observations of empathy. During the program, facilitated by Librarian Paul Sevilla, participants will discussthe topic in three rounds of conversation. During each round, participants will select from aset of questions designed to encourage dialogue. Participants may access the discussionguide and view the list of questions prior to the program using the following link: Living Room Conversations is a non-profit organization formed in 2010 thatprovides an easy structure for engaging, friendly yet meaningful conversations.
