ELMHURST, IL — The number of coronavirus patients is rising at Elmhurst Hospital. The increase is not alarming, but it is a sign the virus has yet to go away. As of Wednesday, Elmhurst Hospital had eight coronavirus patients. A month ago, the hospital had none, according to its reports. Around the country, the numbers are ticking up. In response to a Patch question, the hospital said most of its COVID-19 patients are unvaccinated. Last week, a federal official called the latest trend "a pandemic of the unvaccinated." The number of local patients remains small. As recently as late May, the hospital had more than 20 coronavirus patients. It reached a high of 84 on Nov. 17. No Elmhurst Hospital coronavirus patients have died from the coronavirus in more than a month. The total of such deaths stands at 188 since the pandemic's beginning. With the crisis fading, the hospital stopped issuing daily coronavirus reports in late June. Now it emails them to media every Wednesday.
