ELMHURST, IL — In the last few days, Elmhurst police have handled cases involving a "quick change" scam, marijuana plants, a sidewalk fall, a break-in, a dog bite, slashed tires and alley activities. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports: "Quick change" scam A cashier at Brewpoint, 617 N. York St., was the victim of a "quick change" scam about 4 p.m. Thursday. The man confused the cashier while asking for change for a $100 bill. The suspect was described as white, about 50 years old, and wearing a red baseball hat, glasses and a surgical mask. The man spoke with mumbled speech. Growing marijuana Police received a complaint Friday that a resident in the 100 block of East Madison Street was growing marijuana in a back yard. The officer met with the neighbor, who said she was aware of the number of plants she could grow and would not grow more than five. Fall on sidewalk A woman tripped on the raised part of the sidewalk in the 600 block of South Fairfield Avenue, fell and scraped her knee about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Medics took her to Elmhurst Hospital. Internet scam A resident in the 900 block of South Prospect Avenue provided her Social Security number on a web link claiming to be from the state Department of Transportation about 5 p.m. Thursday. Break-in Someone forced entry through a rear porch window to a condemned house in the 200 block of Illinois Street between Wednesday and Friday. Nothing was taken, and the house is scheduled to be torn down. FOID card given up A resident in the 1000 block of South Spring Road informed police Friday that she wanted to relinquish her son's firearm owner's identification card. She completed a state police disposition record form, and the FOID card was submitted into evidence as a confiscated item. The woman said there were no weapons in the house. Dog bite A woman told police that a dog ran toward her and bit her dog at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Gladys and Willow. Her dog suffered a large puncture wound to the left leg. Tires slashed A resident told police that someone slashed the tires of his son's and his son's friend's bicycles about 10 p.m. Friday in the 100 block of North Addison Avenue. The bikes were locked to a railing on the southeast side of the Addison Avenue parking garage. Alley activities Police received a report of intoxicated youths who were drinking and smoking marijuana about 5 p.m. Sunday in the alley in the 700 block of North York Street. When officers showed up, one youth ran away, was apprehended and then released without charges, with the case referred to the DuPage County Juvenile Probation Office. The second one was cited on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia and released. The third youth was cited on a charge of marijuana possession and released.
