ELMHURST, IL — A swastika was drawn in chalk on a sidewalk near the Elmhurst Art Museum on a recent day, with the word "cool" scrawled above it, police said. Patch obtained the full report on the police call. Police responded about 6:30 p.m. July 11 near Cottage Hill Avenue and Adelaide Street. The drawing, which police described as offensive, was the width of the sidewalk, the report said. An officer searched the area and could not find any nearby chalk writings. Firefighters washed away the swastika. According to the report, an officer went to neighbors' houses and asked whether they knew anything about the drawing. One of the Cottage Hills residents said she saw a group of three intoxicated white girls about 6 p.m. walking south on Cottage Hill near the museum, the report said. One was described as 6-foot-2 with blond hair, the second as 5-foot-7 with "orangish" hair and the third as 5-foot-8 with brown hair. The resident did not see the girls draw on the sidewalk, but one of them punched a parking sign near the exit to the parking lot, police said. Police said they were unable to find any security cameras that may have captured the incident. An officer checked with employees of nearby bars — Pints, Primos Locos, Fitz's Pub and Elmhurst Brewing Company — but none recognized the girls who the resident described.
