BOLINGBROOK, IL — Three boys on the Bolingbrook High School track and field team are Illinois High School Association state qualifiers.
Head Track and Field Coach Jeff Lester recognized the athletes — Brett Wasick, Thailer Herring and Jaquan Howard — at the Valley View District 365 Board of Education meeting Monday.
Wasick, who Lester said has shown "incredible adversity throughout the whole time I've coached him," got third at the sectional meet and qualified under time.
"He did okay at the state meet, but he is a junior and he'll be back next year," Lester said of the student who attended Monday's meeting. "[We're] looking forward to a good cross country season and hopefully back here for cross country and for track for Brett."
Herring and Howard, who weren't present at the meeting, qualified for the high jump and 100-meter sprint, respectively.
"We dealt a very short season this year and these two athletes coming off the football season in the spring did incredibly well for us," Lester said at the meeting.
Herring tied for second place at the sectional meet, which was "about his fourth time high jumping," Lester said.
"He qualified for state, which shows the type of athlete he is," Lester said. "He's able to try anything."
Howard is one of Bolingbrook High School's star football, the head coach said, who has put in a lot of work on the track team as well.
"It was so great for him to qualify," Lester said.
