WOBURN, MA — The Woburn Boys & Girls Club was one of 100 organizations around the country to win a "100 Hometowns" grant from Lowe's to celebrate the company's centennial, Lowe's said Wednesday.
The grant will go to building a new outdoor play area at the Woburn institution that has been in the city for over five decades.
"The chapter hopes to re-landscape its weed-filled lawn with an irrigation system and enhance the outdoor area with creative, age-appropriate play and hang zones that encourage exercise, fun and education," Lowe's said in a news release.
Lowe's expects to complete the project by the end of 2021.
There were over 2,200 qualified submissions for the grant program, the company said.
"With funding in short supply during the pandemic and due to the prioritization of projects that focus on keeping the organization's fees low so no child is turned away, outdoor spaces have often taken a back seat," the release said. "These Lowe's funds will now provide the means for [the Boys & Girls Club] to get a new and improved outdoor play area – one that is safe and fosters positive health outcomes for young people – to be used by local families and children who need them most."
