Can I donate clothes to people in need?

I have a fair amount (no giant bags) of gently used kids and adult clothes (mostly female) and a couple pairs of shoes I would like to give to a domestic/crisis shelter, immigration displacement, or family in need. Included will be some kitchen food things (like oil and seasonings) and female hygiene pads. I need to drop it all off. I just don't want it to get trashed in the drop-off bins, so any leads on OPEN shelters/programs/families would be helpful and appreciated!
