What's with video booths?

I've heard a lot of things about video booths, but have never been. From what I've read and heard, it seems they re principally located in adult book stores and attract mostly older gays. Is that true? Is what occurs inside the rooms allowed by those who work there? Or are patrons charged for use of rooms? Just curious. Your comments are appreciated and kept confidential.
