Description
Hello. My name is John and I've played guitar for over twenty years (I'm 31). I was in numerous rock and metal bands throughout high school (just to look around), and with Slaughter of Elysium opened for Decide and Revocation about ten years ago (check them out, they're awesome). I've been out of the game for a few years while I've focused on other endeavors, so now I'm checking to see what's out there.
I'm somewhat open-spirited when it comes to jamming and creating music. I do not know much theory, love playing wrong notes, and am much more interested in rhythm than melody. My natural tendency is toward a kind of avant-garde Meshuggah (avant-garde in terms of time,) although building on riffs and grooves is always cool, and I've always been into classic rock and punk (my guy growing up was Page); I love death metal, but the strict technicality on the musical end was a turn off for me, so if you're looking for a Ryan Knight or a Dave Davidson, I'm probably not your guy (although maybe a Thordendal or a more loose Schuldiner (although I'm not nearly as good as those guys)).
I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin, Pantera, and the popular hip hop and pop punk of the time (2000's era). Lately I've been into Karnivool, Deafheaven and Faith No More. I have some recording equipment and a decent jam space, but at first, I'm really just looking to jam. I do like the idea of recording completely improvised and then building songs from there, or even keeping the first, fully improvised take as the finished song, and doing full records that way; sort of a jazz-but-for-metal mentality if that makes any sense. But of course all of this is totally dependent on what the music seems to call for at the time.
Thanks for looking, and let me know if you're interested!
