Americana/Roots Rock - Not the Same Old Same Old
Meets
Baltimore MD
Description
Update: No final decisions have been made, but really still mostly looking for potential keyboard players and guitarists, especially those who sing well (NEED MORE SINGERS!!!). But anyone is still welcome to throw your Stetson into the ring. Would also love for a female singer/player to be in the mix. (btw - if you applied before and didn't get a response, I got deluged with replies early on and some may have slipped into the cracks, so write again, if you want.) How about a new idea? How about a cover band that avoids the worn-out, overplayed and threadbare list of the same 300 songs that cover bands have been playing for decades? Instead, a band focused on the untapped wealth of great Americana and Roots Rock that we never get to hear? I'm talking about artists like John Hiatt, Dave Alvin, Subdudes, Joe Ely, Paul Kelly, Graham Parker, Brinsley Schwarz, Blue Rodeo, Faces, Nick Lowe, Rockpile, Buddy Miller, Little Village, the Band, Mark Knopfler, etc. You know - the stuff you (and I) would love to hear, yet rarely, if ever, gets played. I can tell you, from experience, there is an audience for this kind of focus on almost exclusively lesser-known and obscure cherries. This idea is a 5 piece band (2G,B,D,K) - experienced, older folks probably (given the material), some slide or steel guitar, piano, organ, great voices and harmony, rock solid rhythms, interesting bass lines, a little harmonica maybe. Well thought out arrangements that work to the band's strengths, not slavish "human jukebox" reproductions. Sound interesting? We know no one makes a fortune in cover bands, but there is an audience that we can build upon and clubs that will book us. And, as with all things, if you are really good at it, word will get around. Initially, we practice once a week and gig locally (to Baltimore) once a month. I know it can be done with the right people, the right attitude, and the right talent and taste. Let's break the mold for all the folks like us who aren't getting to hear what they (and we) love. If you are into the idea, reply with some info on yourself, including 5 songs in this vein you'd like to cover (not necessarily from the above list of artists). That'll at least get you more conversation, if not a great gig. Okay, the plague's finishing up, so it's prime time. Once more into the breach dear friends; upon this charge, loose the chords of the Weight and cry Levon, Americana and Rock and Roll!!!
