In 1868, 3 years after Abraham Lincoln was murdered, Congress pass the 15th amendment giving the right to vote to black men. Due to loyalty to Lincoln blacks remained loyal to the Republican Party until Franklin D. Roosevelt. Why did FDR go... democrat? FDR wanted to distance himself from his 5th cousin 'Teddy' only because of the 'popularity swing' with who were the 'ruling' New York "big wigs" (The Rockerfellers, J. P.
