I think masks made the pandemic worse, because people took more risks thinking the masks keep them safe. There are 5 levels of hazard controls, and PPE is the last and least effective protection against a hazard. And surgical masks cannot by any definition be considered adequate protection for any hazard. This is well-known, just google hierarchy of controls. Mask propaganda has undoubtedly led people to take more unnecessary trips, increasing the risk of exposure. I think for the herd this is good, but for vulnerable individuals, it's not optimal. Spreading propaganda that encourages vulnerable people think they can go out in public safely if they put on a face diaper... that's just evil.
