Description

Kenbe Fem is a social fundraiser to support Haitian garment workers featured in the documentary film, Batay La. Batay La screens at the Mimesis Documentary Festival August 7th at 5:30pm. Kenbe Fem directly follows the screening. We move to The Twisted Pine Brewing Company to talk, share a bite, drinks and learn more about the situation in Haiti and how to support Batay Ouvriye as Haiti has been thrown into deeper chaos with assassination of corrupt president, Jovenel Moise. Appetizers on us. You cover your beer ;) Attendance at the Batay La screening is not required to join the solidarity event, but those who watch the film will recognize the dire need for support, a need that has only grown in recent months. Batay La, a 25-minute documentary, examines the current anti-imperialist workers’ movement in Haiti, led for decades by the independent organization Batay Ouvriye (Workers’ Struggle). Since 1994, Batay Ouvriye has been dedicated to reconstructing Haiti in the interests of workers, peasants, and the poor--efforts that Batay La documents and celebrates. Translated from Haitian creole, “Kenbe Fem” is to stand firm, to stay strong. Since the filming of Batay La, this phrase takes on new meaning for Batay Ouvriye as they struggle to keep their headquarters open and support workers through this difficult time. While Haiti might feel far removed to some in the US, extreme inequality, corporate power, and societal division have become the norm for American life as well. Find out more about the ways we are connected at the Batay La screening, and join us at the “Kenbe Fem” event after to learn more about the situation in Haiti and how to support Batay Ouvriye. See you there!
