Description
NEWTON, MA — Newton police have reported another house break-in that took place Monday, July 12 on River St. in West Newton, according to a statement from Mayor Ruthanne Fuller.
The latest incident brings the total number of house break-ins from June 1 through July 12 to six. Police say they all took place when no one was home and the first five targeted victims of Asian descent. The suspect(s) were also able to get away with items including jewelry, cash, and handbags.
"Having your home broken into is traumatic under any circumstances; add that the victims may have been purposefully targeted because they are Asian, and it's beyond upsetting," wrote Fuller. "These suspects are stealing some things that are valuable but replaceable, but also family heirlooms and sentimental possessions that can never be replaced. Most of all, for the victims and so many other Newtonians, they have stolen the sense of security and safety that is so essential."
In 2021, Newton has had a total of 54 break-ins, 46 of which took place at residential properties. This numbers lower during the pandemic, with only 19 break ins reported in 2020. In 2019, 36 break-ins were reported for the entire year.
Newton police detectives are continuing to investigate the recent series of break-ins and are currently looking for similarities among the victims, DNA evidence, and video footage. They have also added paroles and are canvassing local neighborhoods to speak with residents directly.
Anyone with information on the break-ins is asked to call Newton police at 617-796-2104 or use the anonymous tip line at 617-796-2121.
