I absolutely hate trying to buy ostomy supplies. Not only do I have to constantly live the annoyance of wearing an ostomy pouch and not being able to poop properly for the rest of my life, but I also have to spend ridiculous amounts of money on stoma supplies that I really wish I could do without. Of all the things that the doctors prepare you for when you are going into surgery, this is not one of them. It is honestly a bit of a challenge to find the ostomy supplies that are right for you, and it can be a long process before you find stuff that you really like. If you didn’t know, there is actually a great variety of ostomy products that many people use. Like most things in life, everyone's a little different and has their own preferences. It took me a long time to figure out which products I liked and which ones I didn’t like. After surgery, the doctors sent me home with a plethora of ostomy supplies for me to start using myself, and the learning curve definitely took some time to get used to. I had a lot of problems with changing my ostomy pouch on my own and making sure that the seal on my skin barrier was tight enough. In addition to finding the right ostomy supplies for you, it can also be a challenge to actually find any ostomy supplies in stores. If you have been to any Walmart or other supermarket, you have probably not noticed a lot of ostomy supplies on the shelves there - this is because capitalism does not care about the healthcare needs of those of us with a stoma. To be honest, I was extremely disappointed with the lack of ostomy supplies in most stores that carry other medical supplies. Even pharmacies, like Walgreens or Rite-Aid, where you would think to find a lot of ostomy supplies, had barely anything on the shelves! This meant that I was having a n extremely hard time finding any ostomy supplies and was quickly running out of what the doctors at the hospital had given me. I tried to buy more supplies that were at the hospital, but my insurance would not cover it. I don’t know about you, but I pay too much for insurance to go ahead and pay for anything out of pocket. That’s why I started looking around at online options for buying my ostomy supplies and all that. I have never been a huge proponent of online shopping, especially since the last time I got scammed on the internet. How was I supposed to know which links I shouldn’t be clicking on? Next thing I know, I’m watching my checking account being wired over to some mud-hut in India. What a tragedy that day was. However, it is true that there can be a lot of options for ostomy supplies if you spend some time researching it on the internet. Thanks to this, I was able to find a decent amount of the ostomy products I needed, and even found some that were covered by my insurance. Buying ostomy supplies online is also convenient because of the fact that you do not even have to leave your house to get the stuff you need.
