The Library’s Summer Reading Program encourages children to explore creativity and grow their knowledge! Free program for grades 1 - 3. Free Program for Grades 1 - 3School is out, and summer is here! Reading over summer vacation can be fun for everyone, and it’s important for students to keep the skills they learned in school finely tuned. This summer, join the Altamonte Springs City Library in connecting children to vibrant learning adventures with reading. The Library’s five-week Summer Reading Program is an exciting opportunity for children to explore creativity while growing their knowledge through books about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). The program encourages participants to read with tracking logs and offers weekly activities featuring guest speakers and take-home STEAM-related crafts. Logs are checked and updated weekly by Library staff. Participants who read at least five books will receive a book of their choice as a prize at the last session. Program DetailsDates: Wednesdays | July 7 - August 4Session Times: Grades 1 - 3 | 11 a.m.Sessions run for 45 minutes. Each session has a capacity of 25 participants.The program is FREE!Activity ScheduleWeek 1 – July 7 | Altamonte Springs Interpretive Rangers will showcase wildlife and teach participants about biology and nature with live interactive animals.Week 2 – July 14 | Chris Finkle, the Library Technology Specialist at Stetson University, will showcase his portable 3D printer and show children how to create a Lego brick from concept to reality utilizing free Tinkercad software.Week 3 – July 21 | The Children’s Librarian will briefly explain what an engineer does and will lead patrons in a bridge building activity to make craft stick trusses.Week 4 – July 28 | Local artist and former commercial architect Lisa Ikegami will demonstrate the process of illustrating a children’s picture book using watercolor paint and lead the children in a hands-on painting session.Week 5 – August 4 | City Library staff will demonstrate why math skills are important for recipe success by making instant microwave cupcakes without using measurements.
