GAITHERSBURG, MD — Police shot and killed a 21-year-old man in a Gaithersburg McDonald's drive-through after receiving a call from restaurant employees that the man refused to pay or leave on Friday night, the Montgomery County Police Department said.
Police say the call came in around 9:15 and when they arrived they saw a handgun on the man's front seat and called for back-up. They negotiated for 30 minutes before "circumstances that are still under investigation led to officers firing their weapons," the police statement says.
The driver — who has not been identified — was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The officers involved are on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing, which the police department said is its standard practice.
The department's Major Crimes division is investigating, and the Howard County State's Attorney's Office will review the investigation. The counties have an agreement that whenever there is an officer shooting that causes injury or death, the other county's State's Attorney's Office will review the investigation into it.
The Montgomery County Police Department will hold a news conference Monday at 5 p.m. to discuss the investigation process.
