Pilot Makes Emergency Landing On Ocean City Bridge

OCEAN CITY, NJ — An 18-year-old pilot flying a banner plane landed safely on the Ninth Street Bridge in Ocean City on Monday after experiencing engine trouble. Ocean City police and fire crews responded to a call that a banner plane made an emergency landing on the Route 52 Causeway at 12:38 p.m., Ocean City spokesperson Doug Bergen said in a statement. Landon Lucas, an 18-year-old flying for Paramount Air Service, experienced engine trouble as he flew near Steel Pier in Atlantic City. He released the banner into the ocean and was trying to reach the Ocean City Municipal Airport. Instead, he saw a gap in traffic on the causeway and landed the plane in the westbound lanes that lead to Somers Point. The plane was parked in the shoulder of the westbound side of the bridge with its wing outstretched over the right lane: No injuries or damage to the plane were reported, Bergen said. An investigation is underway while crews remove the wings and tow the plane away. Both inbound lanes to Ocean City are open and a single lane of outbound traffic is now open while the investigation continues.
