Description
BETHEL, CT — Police are warning residents of a rental property scam.
The Bethel Police Department has recently received numerous complaints about a person posing as a property owner and requesting security deposits or other rental related expenses be paid to a Bitcoin account, or other electronic payment method that masks the scammer's identity.
"While a property may be legitimately available for rent, the scammers copy the listings to other websites such as Facebook Marketplace, and replace the contact information with their own," police posted in their warning on social media.
The police are advising residents not to send any payments related to rental properties to anonymous persons.
