WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — For four weeks in a row, Western Springs saw no new coronavirus cases. In the last week, though, the village experienced five new cases, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. Nationally, coronavirus case rates have been ticking up. The total of coronavirus cases in Western Springs since the pandemic's beginning stood at 1,326 on Sunday. The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths stayed the same in the last week, at six. The latest deaths were reported May 31, May 11 and Nov. 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 53 or older, according to the county medical examiner. The figure compares to 82.1 in Darien, 88.6 in La Grange Park, 92.1 in DuPage County, 93.7 in Hinsdale, 95 in Elmhurst, 100.4 in Clarendon Hills, 102.7 in suburban Cook County, 105.5 in Burr Ridge and 122 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,402,763, up 0.1 percent from a week earlier, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 23,377. Nationally, 33.9 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, up 0.1 percent from the week before, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 606,618 people have died from the virus in the United States.
