SYOSSET, NY — A Nassau man was sentenced to 16 years in prison today for the brutal 2019 murder of his mother at their home in Syosset. Ian Kazer, 31, was convicted on June 3 of first-degree manslaughter, second-degree attempted murder and fourth-degree grand larceny. "Ian Kazer's parents tried to help him after he was fired and arrested for stealing from his job. But that evening, in a fit of rage, the defendant attacked and killed his own mother and tried to kill his father," said Acting Nassau County District Attorney Joyce Smith. "This case was and continues to be a true tragedy." According to the DA's office, Kazer had started stealing from his job at a local target in March 2019. He used stolen gift cards to send electronics to his home. On March 20, he was fired from his job and issued an appearance ticket for stealing more than $2,500 of merchandise. Kazer originally told his parents he had won a gift card from work, and then told the truth and told them he was fired and issued a criminal summons. The family argued, and eventually agreed to return the items and hire a lawyer. Later that evening, Kazer's father left to get pizza for dinner. While he was gone, Kazer attacked his mother at the kitchen table and stabbed her 47 times, in the head, throat, chest and hands. He then took off his bloody clothes and covered his mother's body with a blanket. When his father, Howard, returned home, Kazer attacked him as well, stabbing him in the chest. Kazer's father was able to wrestle the knife away from his son, who then fled the scene wearing only his underwear. Kazer was found by police about a mile from the home and placed under arrest. Kazer's mother, Frances, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Howard Kazer was treated for his injuries.
