TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa saw its number of unemployed residents increase for the second straight month, cutting into gains and improvement made following the sharp economic downturn prompted by the coronavirus pandemic more than a year ago. According to preliminary data from the Alabama Department of Labor, Tuscaloosa County saw its unemployment rise to 3.9% in June — nearly a percentage point higher than the 3.1% unemployment reported in May. Here's a quick rundown of some data high-points The Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area saw its labor force, which is everyone currently employed or actively looking for work, fall to 111,731 in June, marking a staggering decrease of 1,469 individuals. The City of Northport also saw its workforce shrink by more than 200 individuals from May to June, while the City of Tuscaloosa's workforce decreased by roughly 600. The latest figures mark the second straight month unemployment has risen for the Tuscaloosa area, which also lags the state unemployment rate of 3.3%. Looking across the metro, the biggest jump in unemployment could be seen in the City of Tuscaloosa, which saw its number of jobless residents increase by more than a percentage point from May to June.
