SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE The General Laborer is responsible for verifying and separating materials according to type, metal, or other characteristics as established by company procedure. This position may include, but is not limited to; identifying and removing hazardous substances, use of lift trucks, use of skid steers, bailing equipment, picking and sorting, lifting and use of other heavy equipment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Responsible for assisting in unloading and sorting various recycled materials • Weighs and records various metals and materials • Grades and sorts metal, by hand or machine • Pulls apart large metal items, like industrial machinery, using metal cutters and burners • Shreds scrap metal into small pieces using hydraulic shears or fragments • Cleans scraps • Runs machines (balers) to crush the scrap into bales • Operates lift trucks or cranes to stack or load the sorted varieties of recycled materials • Complies with safety regulations SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS: • Must be 18+ years of age • High School Diploma, GED or work related experience • Experience of working in metal fabrication a plus • Capability to complete tasks on your own with little supervision • Ability to lift 50+lbs regularly • Driver’s license required • Requires outside work, and work in non-climate controlled environments year round • Knowledge of various scrap materials a plus • Dependable and consistent work ethic • Strong attention to detail and accuracy PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: Ability to stand constantly throughout shift, walk constantly, frequent use of hands, speak and hear on a frequent basis. Vision abilities including: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. JOB CONDITIONS: Laborers are required to wear protective gear, safety boots, goggles, a helmet and gloves. Exposure to physical operations at metal recycling yards; may include but not limited to walking/climbing in active Industrial yards with uneven surfaces and to out-of-the-way areas.
