Good morning, River City! Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Monday July 19th, 2021! First, today's weather: Partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 96 Low: 60. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: Dry thunderstorms are in the forecast for Monday, increasing fire danger in the region. These dry thunderstorms have the potential for abundant lightening with little rainfall. They will stay mostly over the Sierras, with a possibility of some isolated thunderstorms in The Valley. (ABC10)Health leaders in Sacramento and Yolo counties are asking residents to wear masks indoors. Many residents, even those that are fully vaccinated, have reasons to agree with the guidance. Some are worried about "breakthrough" cases, some have young children who have not been vaccinated that they are trying to protect and some just believe that being safe is the right thing to do. KCRA3 caught up with some of these residents to ask them how they are staying safe. (KCRA3)Sacramento River Cats player Drew Robinson, who survived a suicide attempt last April, has announced his retirement from the team. He will, instead, work in the front office of the Giants as a mental health advocate. He said that he is grateful for his time as a River Cat and is happy to be remaining a part of the game that he loves. This weekend's games against the Round Rock Express will be his last. (CBS Sacramento)Sacramento health officials are concerned about vaccine hesitancy among some of the populations in the county and surrounding counties. The biggest gaps are among Latinos and Hispanics in Stanislaus, San Joaquin and Colusa counties. Yamilet Valladolid, a health advocate for some Central Valley counties, says that religion could be a factor in the hesitancy of these communities. "There's that belief that, 'Well, if it's God's will, be, and if it's not, it isn't." Valladolid said. Faith leaders in those communities could be key to boosting vaccination rates. (KCRA3)Officials are saying that 'nearly all' juvenile Sacramento River winter Chinook salmon could not survive this season. The population of this subspecies declined from a high of 117,000 in 1969, to 200 fish in 1991. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife attributes the potential loss this year to the hot weather and the "persistent heat dome," representatives of fishing and environmental groups believe the situation is a result of state and federal mismanagement of water.
