Happy National Daiquiri Day, Sunday was a fairly laid back day for the news cycle. I have some of the top stories below including a hit and run on Atlantic Avenue, local support for protests in Cuba, and how one family is making sure that their father's legacy lives on. Check out all that and more below. First, today's weather: Rain and humid throughout the day. High: 77 Low: 73. Here are the top stories in Raleigh today: A pick-up truck struck a man crossing Atlantic Avenue in Raleigh overnight Sunday. After hitting the man, the driver of the truck fled the scene leaving the victim behind along with scattered debris. Officers arrived around 2:45am and closed down the road going both directions. Police are still searching for the pick-up truck and any passengers who fled. (WRAL)Around 100 people gathered by Casa Cubana Restaurant & Rum Bar in Raleigh in support of pro-democracy demonstrations happening in Cuba. The island is experiencing some of the largest antigovernmental protests in decades amidst shortages of food, vaccines, and medicine. Among the supporters was Andres Gonzalez, a refugee from Cuba who gained political asylum in the US. (abc11)Years after Stuart Scott passed away after a long battle with cancer, his family hosted "Scoops for Stu," to celebrate his life, and raise money for research. One of the things that Stu loved most was ice cream, and his birthday was the day after National Ice Cream Day. His family thought it would be fitting to celebrate him. The family has awarded nearly $13 million in research grants in Stuart's name. (abc11)Raleigh's city clerk Gail Smith is celebrating 50 years working for the city. Gail answered a deputy city clerk ad in 1971, without knowing what it would entail, but hoping for stability. Gail reflects fondly on her memories of the mayors she has been able to work under, and her time keeping all the minutes.
