The slavery model was identical in everyway to hippie communes of today, except hippie communes don't make a profit. If you think about it, they are the very model of the socialist utopian paradise leftists dream about because the plantation was a self-contained cooperative which was completely autonomous. Slaves, or rather plantation members, created the food they ate, and so long as they did their share they ate well. Elderly plantation members incapable of doing work were well fed and taken care of by the plantations physician. Injured or maimed plantation members were given treatment by the plantations physician. You see, a plantation is a collective farm which provided its plantation members with free food, free healthcare, free retirement benefits, free housing, free everything.
