Under the baton of Artistic Director Kenneth Woods, the MahlerFest Orchestra will return to Macky Auditorium for a night of fifth symphonies.
Visiting Composer Philip Sawyers composed his new symphony during the COVID-19 pandemic. This world premiere performance introduces you to one of Britain's leading symphonists. In reviewing his second symphony, Robert Matthew-Walker wrote in Classical Source , “[a] deeply impressive work, serious in tone throughout, and genuinely symphonic… one of the finest new symphonies by a British composer I have heard in years…”
Gustav Mahler began work on his fifth symphony not long after meeting Alma Schindler, who would later become his wife. It includes the "Adagietto" movement. According to the conductor Willem Mengelberg, an early Mahler champion, “This Adagietto was Gustav Mahler’s declaration of love to Alma! Instead of a letter, he confided it in this movement without a word of explanation. She understood and replied: He should come!!! (I have this from both of them!)”
