The 2021 Men’s World Championship will take place May 21-June 6, 2021 in Riga, United States vs Canada. The event was originally planned to be split between Riga and Minsk, Belarus, but was moved exclusively to Riga by the IIHF on Feb. 2, 2021. The 2021 Ice Hockey World Championship kicks off on May 21, and to say fans are excited would be an understatement.The U.S. Men’s National Team will compete in Group B alongside Canada, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Norway, Italy and Kazakhstan and play at Arena Riga. Most recently, the U.S. finished seventh of 16 teams in the 83rd edition of the IIHF Men’s World Championship in 2019 with wins in five of eight games (4-1-0-3/w-otw-otl-l) and has gone 19-7 over the last three world championships. After a gap of a year due to the global pandemic, the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship took place in the Latvian capital Riga from 21 May to 6 June. Finland will defend their title with 16 teams battling it out for the right to be called world champions, and lay down a marker ahead of next year’s Beijing Winter Games. The top four teams in each group, with head-to-head points the first tiebreaker in the case of two teams finishing level on points, go through to the quarter-finals. With this year’s lower division championships cancelled due to the pandemic, there is no relegation for the side finishing bottom in each group as in previous years meaning all 16 teams will play in next year’s competition in Finland. Russia’s ban from global sporting competition means they are represented in Latvia by ROC, the abbreviation of the Russian Olympic Committee, with no sign of the country’s flag or anthem.
