PLAINFIELD, IL — More than 240 teachers from across the country went to Plainfield North High School for two weeks in June to fine-tune their teaching skills for Advanced Placement classes. Over the course of the program, AP-certified and College Board-approved instructors led classes — 30 hours of training — that taught the skills in 24 subjects. High schools across the country offer AP classes as a way to provide students with more rigorous, college-like courses while also giving them an opportunity to get college credit depending on how well they do in the class. At District 202, there are a variety of subjects, including in art, science, math, English, history and language, offered as AP courses. More than 4,400 teachers have attended the institute hosted by District 202 over the course of its runtime and this year, attendees came from 25 states and Puerto Rico. Nineteen teachers from District 202 attended the training. Plainfield School District 202 is one of the few K-12 districts to host the AP Summer Institute as they're usually held at universities. They've been hosting the program every year since 2009, save for 2020 when it was canceled due to the pandemic. "To host these summer institutes is a real compliment to the district and our staff," Dan McDonnell, director for high school curriculum and instruction, said in a statement. McDonnell and Craig Brown, director for high school administration and personnel, organize the program. This summer, $24,000 in proceeds from the AP Summer Institute were used to fund 12 scholarships for students who excelled in academics, participated in sports and clubs in and out of school and needed financial help, officials said. "Our own teachers learn best practices from the very best AP instructors, which then helps our students do better in the classroom, which is obviously a real benefit for District 202," McDonnell said.
