3-Year-Old Girl Seriously Injured In Wilmington Rollover Crash

WILMINGTON, MA — A woman and child were injured in a rollover crash on Interstate 93 in Wilmington. The child, a 3-year-old girl, was ejected from the vehicle in the crash and suffered serious injuries. She was flown to a Boston hospital. The woman, 32, had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Both victims are from Chelsea. They were the only occupants of the vehicle, a 2001 BMW 325 wagon. The car was going southbound on I-93 when it "vehicle veered to its left, hit the guardrail and rolled over it, coming to rest on its roof partially in the left northbound lane," state police said in a news release. The reason for the car veering remains under investigation. There were two car seats in the car, but "whether the child was appropriately restrained in a seat remains part of the ongoing investigation." Wilmington firefighters, EMS and police, state police and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation all responded to the crash. Traffic in both directions was temporarily stopped to allow the helicopter to land. State police is investigating the crash.
