Once again, the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission has implemented a program that is designed to promote the tenets of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and honor his life and legacy. On August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. shared his great dream of hope, healing, and goodwill with our nation and world. To commemorate the 58th Anniversary of the Historic March on Washington which took place on August 28, 1963 and the Poor People’s Campaign of 1968, the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission announces that they will attend the 58th Anniversary of the historic March on Washington in Washington, D.C. and simultaneously host “Pre-March on Little Rock Rally” and “March on Little Rock” commemorative programming, Saturday, August 28, 2021, 8:30 AM. The “Pre-March on Little Rock Rally” begins on the steps of the Pulaski County Courthouse (401 West Markham, Little Rock, Arkansas 72201) at 8:30 AM. Immediately following, at 9:45 AM line up on Markham Street to march to the Arkansas State Capitol (500 Woodlane Street, Little Rock, Arkansas 72201) for the “March on Little Rock: Commemoration of the 58th Anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington.” ***All the above-mentioned events will take place outdoors, so please plan and dress accordingly. There will not be any restroom facilities along the march route to the Arkansas State Capitol. Please be advised that all participants, guests, attendees, etcetera will be encouraged to practice social distancing per the guidelines from the CDC ( https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV/index.html ), the Arkansas Department of Health ( https://www.healthy.arkansas.gov/.../novel-coronavirus ), and mandates/executive orders in effect ( https://governor.arkansas.gov/our-office/executive-orders/ ). The Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is a Division of the Arkansas Department of Education empowered to serve all Arkansans.  It was created in 1993 by Act 1216 of the Arkansas General Assembly to promote the legacy and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. throughout the State of Arkansas and abroad.  The Arkansas MLK, Jr. Commission works closely with the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta, Georgia and other social service entities alike.   The mission of the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is a Division of the Arkansas Department of Education is to promote understanding and acceptance of nonviolence and human equality as a way of building community among all Arkansans and abroad in an effort to ensure that those involved acquire an enhanced knowledge of the tenets and morals of other races and cultures that co-exist within the state's borders.   Purpose and Goals   Promote racial harmony, understanding, community service, respect, and goodwill among all Arkansans and abroad   Promote Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Six Principles Of Nonviolence   Promote awareness and appreciation of the Civil Rights movement and advocacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s philosophy, principles, and legacy throughout the State of Arkansas and abroad   Promote awareness and appreciation of the Civil Rights movement and advocacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s principles and legacy   Develop, coordinate, and advise the Governor and General Assembly of appropriate ceremonies and activities throughout the state relating to the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday and Holiday   Promote understanding and acceptance of nonviolence and human equality as a way of building community among all Arkansans
