PORT JEFFERSON STATION, NY — A group of kind-hearted animal lovers came together to save a baby mockingbird on Wednesday night.
A Suffolk County police spokesman said a 911 caller reported a baby bird had fallen into a storm drain near ShopRite on Route 347 in Port Jefferson Station at about 9 p.m. Police Emergency Service Section officers removed the storm drain, and the peeping youngster was scooped out of the drain by an animal rescuer from Strong Island Animal Rescue League.
The rescue group announced the rescue on its Facebook page Wednesday, saying that they received a call from police about the bird trapped in a drain on a "busy" roadway late Wednesday.
"Saved! To save a mockingbird!," read a post on the group's page.
The post continued, explaining that traffic on Rte. 347 had to be stopped, so that police could use the Jaws of Life to cut the grate "and get the baby out."
After the rescue, the bird was taken to a farm where there will be a new nest made so that it can be reunited with its mother, according to the post.
The rescue group gave special thanks to "the boys in blue" in the post.
"Teamwork" saves animals, the post read.
The group operates on donations and is requesting anyone who would like to contribute to visit its website at www.strongislandanimalrescuele...
