SPRINGFIELD, VA — All lanes of southbound Interstate 95 have reopened in the Springfield area after they were closed down Friday morning when a stolen car crashed into a tanker truck, according to officials.
The I-95 express lanes were reversed to allow southbound traffic to use them.
At around 8 a.m. Friday, Virginia State Police attempted to make a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle traveling west on Interstate 495 headed toward southbound I-95. The car refused to stop and sped away, and the state police started chasing the car.
As the Nissan was traveling south on I-95, the driver lost control and struck a tanker truck. The Nissan then continued across the southbound lanes and struck a Jersey wall, according to the state police. This crash occurred near Exit 166 (Rte. 286/Fairfax County Parkway).
The adult male driver of the Nissan was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, according to the state police. The Nissan was reported stolen out of Maryland.
