CHATHAM, NJ — Brad Hayworth, formerly a sergeant with the Chatham Township Police Department, was promoted to lieutenant at the Township Committee meeting on Thursday night. Stacey Ewald, who took her oath of office as mayor herself on Thursday, administered Hayworth's oath of office. She said Hayworth began his career with the township in 2000 as a dispatcher, taking the police test in 2003 to become one of two officers hired. In May 2011, he started in the detective bureau, where he stayed until he was promoted to sergeant in 2015. His sergeant duties expanded in 2018, as an administrative sergeant, also overseeing the detective bureau. The department, which congratulated Hayworth in a Facebook post after Thursday's meeting, can now begin a recruiting process if needed, according to Chief Thomas Miller on Friday, after a resolution was approved at Thursday's meeting, permitting the department to potentially hire more police officers. "We currently have no vacancies but may in the latter part of 2022," Miller told Patch. "We have a few officers who will be eligible to retire in 2022, although no one has officially notified me of their intent to retire." "This resolution will allow us to get a jump start to actively recruit and vet interested candidates, so we can create a pool of qualified candidates to pull from, should a vacancy arise due to a retirement," Miller added. Another police department resolution up for approval on Thursday, permitted the department to buy up to $24,325 in new equipment, to replace aging security cameras and related items, of which replacement costs can be prohibitive.
