Reduced Bond Denied For Bartow Man Who Attempted 'Suicide By Cop'

CARTERSVILLE, GA — A Bartow County man, whose public defender said he tried to commit "suicide by cop," remains behind bars Thursday after a judge refused to reduce bond. Sean Walter Cobler of Cartersville is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon during a felony and other counts. The charges are connected to an incident on March 12 where prosecutors say Cobler pulled a gun on a Cartersville police officer and told him "he wanted to die." Cobler, who was pulled over because of a misdemeanor warrant for an earlier offense, finally threw his gun out the window of his car but struggled with police when they arrested him, according to District Attorney Whitney Law as reported by The Daily Tribune News. Cobler first "began banging his head on the ground," Law said, then rammed his head into a patrol car when police tried to help him into an ambulance, according to the Cartersville newspaper. "There are pictures of the dented patrol car with blood on it," Law said to Judge Suzanne H. Smith Monday in Bartow Superior Court. Cobler's bond had previously been set at $100,000 in June. Public defender Becky Graham asked it be cut in half, noting Cobler intended only to harm himself and he's since been placed on medications. Read the story in The Daily Tribune News.
