PORT WASHINGTON, NY — North Hempstead Beach Park will open early to senior residents this summer as warm, humid air continues to sweep across Long Island. The park — located at 175 W. Shore Rd. in Port Washington — now opens weekdays at 8 a.m. No lifeguards will be on duty until 9 a.m. "It is important to us that our senior residents always have options to remain active," said North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth. "Our early hours provide a wonderful opportunity for our seniors to exercise when the weather is cooler and avoid the extreme heat that can come during the middle of the day." Older adults tend to be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps and heat stroke. If left untreated, these illnesses can be deadly. The Town has provided the following tips to help residents beat the heat: Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the dayWear clothing that is light-colored, lightweight, loose, and absorbent (cotton is a good choice)Eat fruits and vegetables to replace nutrientsWear a wide-brimmed hat when going outdoorsTake cool baths and shower once or twice a dayLimit caffeine and alcoholic drinksCheck the daily heat index in the newspaper to alert you to risk of heat-related illnessFor more information, call 3-1-1.
