Press release from the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce : Michael Brown, Principal WMHS 07/15/2021 Cadet Major Nicholas Henderson, a senior at Winters Mill High School, received the SAR Bronze JROTC Medal presented by the Westminster Chapter Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). He also was presented with the state JROTC award from the Maryland Society SAR. Westminster Chapter President James F. Engler, Sr. presented both awards during a unit training event at the school.   The SAR Bronze JROTC Medal endeavors to foster the principle of "citizen-soldier" exemplified by the Minutemen. The commanding officer of the JROTC unit has full latitude in selecting an outstanding ROTC cadet based on their military bearing, leadership potential, attitude, scholastic achievements, and general excellence.    The SAR has an Enhanced Essay program for JROTC, requiring a 500-700 word essay on the topic "How JROTC has prepared me to be a better citizen of the United States of America." Cadet Henderson submitted his essay to the state competition, where it earned first place. The state award included a medal and monetary prize. Cadet Henderson's essay has since been submitted to the National Society SAR in a nation-wide competition.
