BALTIMORE, MD — Two Baltimore police officers shot in a confrontation outside Security Square Mall were released from the hospital, authorities reported Thursday. The officers were injured Tuesday in a shootout with a man accused of murder in Baltimore City. Justin Powell, 32, of Baltimore, was wanted on a warrant for murder and handgun charges, police said. After 8 a.m., detectives said they had tracked Powell and his vehicle to the 6100 block of Security Boulevard, where he got out and shot at officers when they approached him in the parking lot of the mall. Multiple officers fired at Powell, who died at an area hospital, according to the Baltimore Police Department. Officials said the two officers were taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment of gunshot wounds. Both officers were released Wednesday from shock trauma, police said. The Baltimore detectives were assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force and had been looking for a vehicle and suspect in a June 19 homicide that occurred in the 1000 block of West Lanvale Street, police said. "In honor of their service and sacrifice, members of the Baltimore Police and U.S. Marshals, as well as staff members from Shock Trauma, formed a ceremonial gauntlet as they came out," the Baltimore Police Department reported Thursday.
