Village Approves Replacement Of Old Stone Church Steps, Wall

LEMONT, IL — Due to a safety issue, the wall and steps entering the Lemont Area Historical Society, 306 Lemont St., need to be replaced. At its Monday meeting, the Lemont Village Board approved a $33,550 proposal with Martino Concrete Company for the project. The village was approached by volunteers from the historical society about an issue on the south side of the building, Director of Public Works Ralph Pukula said. "It's a staircase, and a concrete wall that separated, and it has become a safety issue," Pukula said. The historical society contacted a local architect for the replacement design, but an estimate of the design was more than $100,000, board documents state. Public works staff contacted Martino Concrete Company, and was able to receive the $33,550 proposal. Since it is a safety issue, and the historical society does not have the funding for the project, the Village will contract with Martino Concrete Company to do the work. "I think it's a good project for the village," Pukula said. "I think we all agree. The historical society is important to the town," Mayor John Egofske said. "It's something we wish to continue and fully support, and it's been a long-standing group in our town." The building at 306 Lemont St. is also known as the Old Stone Church. According to the historical society website, the church is the oldest church structure in the village. The cornerstone was laid in 1861. The church was deeded to the historical society in 1970.
