Six students from The Quarry Lane School in Dublin earned awards in the UC Davis Biotechnology Program's 2021 Teen Biotech Blogging Challenge (TBBC), including four first place honors.
Four students earned awards in the Intermediate level for students in grades 9 and 10. Sudharsan Gopalakrishnan earned first place in the Agricultural Biotechnology and Food Science category for his entry, "Get to Know GMO's". Modakar Kurma's entry, "The Future of Energy: Algal Fuels", earned first place in the Environmental Biotechnology and Planetary Health category. Romal Mitr, also earned first place in the Molecular Tools: Nanobiotechnology, Synthetic Biology and Genetic Engineering category with her entry, "Keeping it Crisp with CRISPR". In the Regenerative Medicine and Biomedical Engineering category, Om Chaya earned first place with his entry, "Optogenetics: Controlling the Mind with Light".
At the Senior level for students in grades 11 and 12, Andy Seo received an Honorable Mention award for his entry, "Cell Therapy in Regenerative Medicine". Xinyi Dong also received an Honorable Mention award for her entry in the Drug Discovery and Biomanufacturing category, "Plant-Made Pharmaceuticals: Innovative and Practical Future Medicine Production".
Students participating in the competition were asked to submit a 500-700 word blog entry and an original, student-designed media element (photo, figure, or infographic) in one of the six categories. According to the UC Biotechnology Program's website, the program aims to encourage high school students to demonstrate their understanding of biotechnology's impact on our world.
