So far, states have largely managed their own vaccination coordination efforts — and some have proven more efficient at it than others. In North Carolina, 42.9% of the population are fully vaccinated, lower than the U.S. average. Lower than average vaccination rates in North Carolina appear to be attributable in part to less efficient vaccination rollout. As of July 9, North Carolina has received about 11,826,600 vaccinations and administered about 79.6% of those doses. As the virus mutates and new variants spread, vaccinating the population as rapidly as possible is critical. In total, there have been 1,016,262 confirmed cases of the virus in North Carolina as of July 9 — or 9,787 for every 100,000 people.
