Hours: 12-16 hours/week over 2-3 days Compensation: $20-$24/hour This is a good opportunity for a serious gardening hobbyist or for a landscape architecture, horticulture, agriculture, or botany student who would like to gain experience related to their field of study by managing an organic vegetable garden, a native plant garden, and a chicken pen. Responsibilities include garden development, plant selection, planting, pruning and maintenance, soil amendment and preparation, drip irrigation system installation and maintenance, chicken pen maintenance, general landscaping and sweeping. All tools will be provided. General tasks: • Prepare soil and set up drip irrigation system. • Manage vegetable garden layout, seasonal plantings, and selecting and purchasing plants. • Plant vegetables and other plants. • Occasional online research related to pest control, plant health, and gardening practices. • Weed paths and garden beds to remove spurge. • Feed, water, and maintain chicken pen and coop. • Sweep sidewalk, paths, steps, driveway, patio and pool deck. • Remove excess oak leaves from garden beds and spider webs around the yard, around gate pillars, and in eaves. • Clean outdoor light fixtures, tables, BBQ and sink. Preferred Skills: • Hard working and able to tolerate dust and year-round weather in Altadena • Ability to lift 50 pounds • Plant care experience • Vegetable gardening experience • Plant knowledge is a plus • Soil knowledge is a plus • Organic pest control is a plus A background check will be performed. Mask wearing may be required.
