Description

9th ANNUAL WALK FOR MENTAL HEALTH, October 9, 2021 Dear Panhandle Community, 1 in 5 people are affected by mental illness – our families, our friends, our neighbors, church members, and our community. Often, substance abuse, school and work problems, family dysfunction, and homelessness are caused by the underlying issue of mental illness. It affects Amarillo. It affects us. Let’s work together to: raise awareness, end stigma, encourage treatment, and improve mental health services in our community. Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 9th, Memorial Park (next to Amarillo College), 3-5 pm. We are encouraging our community leaders, mental health peers, families, friends and health providers to walk with us, and donate to our cause. You can use this website to register for the Walk. If you have groups or teams of walkers (5 or more people), please use the team registration form below to get the discount of $15.00 per team walker. This website will not apply the discount. Team Registration Form Registration price is currently $20.00, but it will increase to $25.00 after September 10. If you register after September 10, you are not guaranteed a free t-shirt so please sign up before the deadline. Thank you for your support! You can pick up your free t-shirt on Friday, Oct. 8, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Polk St. Methodist Church, Room 105 OR at Memorial Park on the day of the Walk, Oct. 9, between 3:00-5:00 p.m. All funds will be evenly divided between NAMI Texas Panhandle and AAMHC-Agape Center, both 501(c)3 nonprofits. Funds will support their FREE, vital, unduplicated mental health services to hundreds of people in the Texas. NAMI Texas Panhandle is dedicated to improving the quality of life of all individuals living with mental illness and their families through support, education, and advocacy. We offer free support groups, classes, seminars, and speakers. We also advocate in our community for increased mental health awareness and improved mental health services. Amarillo Area Mental Health Consumers/Agape Center (AAMHC) was formed in 1996 by a group of peers who were interested in learning more about empowerment, advocacy, and participation in the community. The primary mission of Amarillo Area Mental Health Consumers is to organize, encourage, educate, and train people with mental illness to advocate for themselves and support each other in their recovery. Our vision is the integration of mental health consumers into the community as productive, functional, valued citizens. Organizations in the mental health network frequently refer their clients to our day program so they can benefit from recovery-based activities. Thedaily programming consists of mental health education groups, peer support groups, GED training, computer workshops, exercise and yoga groups, art groups, vocational assistance, social outings, and independent living skills training. Once again, thank you for being a donor for the annual Walk for Mental Health over the years! Your financial support helps us to reach out and improve mental health in the Amarillo community! Such support is needed now more than ever as people with mental illness are struggling with the residual effects of the COVID19 pandemic. Thank you, Julie McCracken, NAMI Texas Panhandle, President Tony Foster, Amarillo Area Mental Health Consumers, Executive Director
