You have a place at The Shabbat Table! Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles has a notoriously rich Jewish past. Though we also have a very small but unique Jewish cultural presence in the barrio today, a small circle of old-timers and newcomers. It is also home to many Jews of Color, as well as inter-racial and inter-faith families who celebrate their Jewish culture and faith. It is also a special meeting place between the diverse ethnic groups of the area, who celebrate each other’s culture as well. In these Shabbat Table events we will be honoring our community past, while sparking inspiration for our present and future; blending Eastern European Jewish and Mexican/Latino/Sephardic flavors, indeed all the flavors which are the heritage of our community. We are very honored to have owners of EARLE’S ON CRENSHAW offer to sponsor the food for this month's Shabbat Table meal! Earle's on Crenshaw they have served the Crenshaw community and greater Los Angeles area for over 30 years. Founded by brothers Cary and Duane Earle, these Brooklyn natives have created an institution built on the foundation of family, commitment to quality, and dedication to superior service. With a menu boasting New York inspired classics, Los Angeles culinary trends, and robust vegan offerings, Earle’s on Crenshaw has something for everyone! (https://www.earlesrestaurant.com/) We are so touched to have the owners of Earle's on Crenshaw providing the food and personally joining us this special Shabbat celebration. You are invited to join a very special Erev Shabbat celebration with THE BOYLE HEIGHTS CHAVURAH on Friday, July 23, 2021, starting at 7:30pm; in honor of Shabbat Nachamu, the Sabbath of comfort and consolation, which is traditionally the theme of the Haftorah reading on the Shabbat which comes immediately after the mournful Fast of Tisha b'Av; after such mourning, we come together to find consolation and comfort. After all we have been through this past year and a half, this Shabbat offers us a chance for communal consoluation and comfort. There is no better way to comfort each other than with comfort food, right? We think so too! We will be doing candle lighting together to welcome in the Sabbath, so please feel bring to bring your own Shabbat candles if you want to help us flood this sacred space with light. The liturgy will be lead in Hebrew, Spanish and English, lead by Reb Shmuel Gonzales the Barrio Boychik, community organizer and founder of The Boyle Heights Chavurah; as well as receiving inspiration and torah drash from our dear Rabbi Robin Podolsky. We will be having a traditional shabbat kiddush with wine and challah, followed by a kosher meat meal, with also some vegetarian options available upon special request. We maintain the basics of Jewish dietary laws so that people of all level of ritual observance can feel included in the meal, and break bread with us. However, we do need everyone to RSVP as soon as possible, so that we know how much food for our our very generous sponsors at Earle's on Crenshaw to have an accurate count of our meal order. Shmuel Gonzales, the Barrio Boychik, is a community organizer and local historian from Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles. As a Mexican American with roots in early Los Angeles and as a Jewish community leader in today’s eastside, it is his great pleasure to share with you the neglected stories of the diverse faith cultures of our great city. He is the founder of the Boyle Heights History Studios (& Tours) - a community cultural center which is funded entirely by donations in the form of tour ticket sales; enabling us to maintain the heritage of our neighborhood. He also is the founder of the Boyle Heights Chavurah - the grassroots Jewish fellowship of East Los Angeles. Shmuel is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Boyle Heights Historical Society. He is also the in-house community organizer for the Pico Union Project, a community center located in the oldest remaining synagogue in Los Angeles. He is also a lay religious leader and the chair of the Jewish Ritual Committee for Beth Shalom of Whittier, serving the communities of Southeast Los Angeles. As well as volunteer my time for a multitude of projects related to the historical preservation of the working-class community of Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles.
