Press release from the County of Dane: July 14, 2021 (608) 346-2724 Dane County Board Supervisor Elena Haasl (District 5) is highlighting the importance of International Non-Binary People's Day which is observed annually on July 14.   The day is meant to raise awareness of the issues faced by non-binary people around the world. First celebrated in 2012, the date was chosen for being between International Men's Day and International Women's Day.   Non-binary is a term for people whose gender identity doesn't sit comfortably with "man" or "woman". Non-binary identities are varied and can include people who identify with some aspects of binary identities, while others reject them entirely.   According to The Trevor Project: Diversity of Non-binary Youth, a recently revealed report, they found that overwhelmingly, non-binary youth indicated that having people in their life use the correct name and pronouns to refer to them would make them feel happy about their gender.   "We all play a role in creating an inclusive community. Recognizing this important day underscores the need for all of us to evaluate the small changes we can make in our own lives to make others feel included and accepted," said Haasl.   On his first day in office, President Biden signed an Executive Order on Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation, which states that "All persons should receive equal treatment under the law, no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation".   "We've come a long way as a community and country, but we have so much further to go," said Haasl.   This press release was produced by the County of Dane.
