RACINE COUNTY — The Racine County Sheriff's Office identified the victim of the shooting that occurred at the Pilot Travel Center in Racine County Tuesday morning.
Anthony F. Griger of Elkhorn, 22, was killed by the shooting. The shooter is a 32-year-old man from Hartland who has not been identified. Griger was killed when he was pumping gas around 7:30 a.m. outside of the Pilot Travel Center off of Interstate 94 in Racine County, officials said at a news conference Tuesday.
Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling described the shooting as a "vicious execution."
After Griger was killed at the Pilot Travel Center, the shooter fled to a separate gas station two miles east. At the second gas station, the shooter encountered an undercover investigator from Racine County who was pumping gas, officials said at the news conference.
When the shooter arrived at the second gas station it was already bustling with people getting ready for their day, Schmaling said in the news conference Tuesday.
The shooter approached the undercover investigator and began shooting, Schmaling said. The investigator and shooter exchanged gunfire in the parking lot of the gas station.
The undercover investigator was hospitalized after the encounter and the shooter was killed, the sheriff's office said.
"There is no doubt in my mind the quick, heroic actions of our investigator saved lives today," Schmaling said.
The motive for the shootings are unknown.
The injured undercover investigator from Racine has not been identified.
The family of Griger has asked for the public to respect their privacy as they grieve, according to a news release from the Racine County Sheriff's Office.
